Flutes

What we did
  • Assessment of performance targets for line 7
    • Both attained proficiency
  • Developed performance targets and strategies to master lines 16 and 17

What to do
  • Meet performance targets on lines 16 and 17

Looking Ahead
  • Applying articulation to the air stream

Clarinets/Alto Saxophone

What we did (Soren, Delaney and Antonio AB)
Gwyneth only
  • Working to meet performance targets for line Line 16, 17 and 23, 25: Targets met
  • We looked ahead to line 28 to enhance aural training. Can she write a successful cadence to the line? After some discussion and experimentation, she did.
  • Introduced the note A; lines 30 and 31 are etudes to play A with easy finger switch. Line 34 (Bead line) incorporates A in the music.
  • Introduced the B note (low). Line 36 introduces the note; Line 39 utilizes the note.

Delaney is reading and performing well. His outstanding level will be reached with attention to establishing a more controlled air stream which will a more mature tone, facility and articulation.

Gwyneth has shown much improvement over last week when we discovered her teeth were on the reed. This is habit she will need to always be conscious as she works to break it. She is learning how to coordinate air and embouchure in the right way and is reading music at a good level. I would like her to pay attention to keeping her hand more relaxed and close to the keys. She is developing well.

Antonio is doing well even though he is a little behind. Today, we were able to work on his music reading skills and develop a better embouchure. However, he is going to have to be dedicated to firming the muscles in his embouchure so the air can work efficiently. I see good things coming from Antonio if he is willing to work consistently.

What to do
  • Soren and Delaney meet performance targets for lines 17, 23, 25 and "Let's Go Band"
  • Antonio should be working to meet performance targets on line 7
  • Gwenyth: Line 34 and 39-meet performance targets

Looking Ahead
  • Begin All-City Music

Percussion (Michael AB?)
What we did
  • Assessed performance targets for Haskell-Harr Lesson 6; Coordinated the Bass Drum notes with the Snare Drum.
    • Michael has good time and comprehends the material very well.
      • I would like to see a more controlled rebound on his stroke that is only 3" in height right now. The rebound averages 6" so I would like to see a more snappy bounce and keep his grip consistently firm.
  • Discussed and played through Haskell-Harr Lesson 7 (eighth notes)
    • Counting, clapping, performing various eighth note rhythm patterns
  • Discussed how to perform and read the rudiment: Flam
What to do
  • Dedicate time to developing a really clean stroke (see notes)
  • Meet performance targets for Haskell-Harr Lesson 7
  • Apply to flam rudiment to Haskell-Harr Lesson 6

Looking Ahead
  • Haskell-Harr lesson 7
  • more rudiments
